SC4-Control of geodynamics on the Eastern Arabia petroleum habitat;

A bridge between geosciences and industry challenges through innovative solutions

Instructor: Mesbah Khalil (Saudi Aramco)

Fee: US$ 100.00 (coffee breaks & lunch included)

A Saudi Aramco Short Course

Overview

This course introduces the three major platforms of geodynamics in eastern Arabia: basic geosciences, local setting and exploration challenges interconnected through two bridges: full data integration approach and innovative solutions for inventing new play concepts.

In short and conclusive presentations supported with results of case studies, the topics to be covered in this course are in the following sequence:

1- Earth’s composition and layering as a cause for earth’s thermal state

2- Earth’s thermal state as a cause for the earth’s stress state

3- Earth’s stress state as a cause for plate tectonics phenomenon

4- Plate tectonics as the main controlling factor for generation and characterization of the sedimentary basins and their hydrocarbon system elements.

About the instructor

Mesbah Khalil received his Ph. D. in structural geology in 1995. He is a petroleum geologist specialized in structural applications with 32 years experience. He started his career in 1977 after B.Sc. with honor in geology and chemistry from AL Azhar University teaching for the Suez Canal University for 2 years. Mesbah moved to the oil business with Geo-services (a French company) as a mud-logger for one year, then the Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (Joint venture with Amoco Production) for16 years, then the Italian oil company ENI group, Agip, for 7 years, and then moved to Saudi Aramco in 2003 till present.

Mesbah developed a special talent in generating hydrocarbon exploration and development play concepts from surface and subsurface analog models that led to several discoveries during his career. He has led several international field trips since 1982 for AAPG, International Geological Union, international conferences and the Egyptian Petroleum Exploration Society and recently for Saudi Aramco. Mesbah Khalil is currently working for New Exploration Opportunities division of Saudi Aramco.

Mesbah Khalil is the author and co-author for several publications, the most important is chapter 20 in geology of Egypt book (1990) on the positive basin inversion in North Africa and the analogs of the Jinadiryah folds east of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (2009).
